Notes

  • Program notes:

...without words is the second piece in the series Third World Fables for piano trio. Each "fable" is inspired by sounds, stories or cultural elements of life in my home country of Uzbekistan. ...without words resembles the sound of qanun - a beautiful zither-like plucked instrument that is often used as accompaniment for songs and muqams, as well as in ensembles and virtuosic solos. Hence the title ...without words implies the song-like quality of the piece without a vocal line. The piano imitates the sound of the qanun, and the strings, entering later, slowly gain independence by turning the piano material into melodic lines. The piece clearly splits into two parts: like in much of Middle-eastern philosophy and literature, one resembles human life and the other - cosmic existence.

...without words received its commission and premiere as part of the 2018 Cultivate Emerging Composers Institute at Copland House, an event which was awarded a 2019 Project Grant from New Music USA.
