    Les Planches de Milbray
    Program Note
The city of Paris is filled with faces-representing low-reliefs, named « masks » or « mascarons », which decorate several, ancient, architectural works. At the end of one of Paris’ oldest bridges, the Pont Notre-Dame - named « Planches de Milbray » between the 10th and 15th century-, four of these faces stare straight at the horizon.
At a certain period of my life, having to cross this bridge everyday in order to reach the IRCAM, I used to cross the eyes of these somber and austere faces. Their tortured expression seemed to contain the echo of a remote complaint and to recall the tousands of passers-by, who for centuries had been, like myself, intrigued by that vision of stone.
