    REQUIEM FOR A CITY(2015-2016) 15’I was profoundly shocked by the terrorist attacks in Paris in January 2015, against Charlie Hebdo and the Jewish supermarket Hyper Casher, following an attack in 2014 at the Jewish Museum in Brussels. But the extreme barbarity of the Islamist attacks on November 13 went even one step further, becoming the worst massacre in France since wartime. I happened to be in artist residency in Paris on both occasions. Driving back home on November 14, after the cancellation of the performance we were meant to give in Paris on that evening, I felt the need to say something about it. Back in the studio, I composed this tribute to the victims. It uses a wide variety of sounds: field recordings, special playing techniques on the viola, granulation of extracts of the second movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony and Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, modular analog synthesizers and testimonies extracted from news reports and interviews on radio and television following the November 13 attacks. I was particularly touched by the testimonies from the ones who were trapped for hours in the Bataclan concert hall with the Islamist terrorists. Some could flee, but many had to find places to hide or had to play deadunder the corpses in order to survive. Endless hours of wait, in shock, as the barbarian murderers moved between spaces and came back several times, calmly executing people lying on the ground when they noticed signs of live, with the intend to explode themselves amongst the survivors. A small group managed to hide, cramped for hours in a tiny technical space, holding firmly the door handle to make it look closed. The assassins came back three times, trying to open that door. They didn’t manage, but each time those who were hiding thought their last hour had come. The structure of the piece reminds these endless hours of wait, with alternating feelings of shock, relief, hope, resignation and fear. Besides the voices of the survivors, the piece ends with those who lost loved ones. Though this work came as a reaction to the Paris attacks, I choose not to name the city in the title, in tribute to the many other cities hit in the past by the same fanatical ideology. And to the many cities that followed, including Brussels, my hometown, where three Islamists exploded themselves on March 22, 2016, assassinating and maiming hundreds, amongst them, a friend of mine, murdered in the metro. This work isdedicated to all the victims of blind religious violence, their friends and relatives.

    “Requiem for a City”, composed at ARTeM studio, was not premiered as planned during the LOOP Festival in November 2015, as the Festival was cancelled by city authorities because of terrorist threats. It was finally premiered in a revised version at the LOOP concert on September 29, 2016, in Brussels. With the support of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (Direction Générale de la Culture, Service de la Musique).
