Notes

  • Program notes:

The piece is as a commission of the Merel Quartet (Zurich), the premiere was in the festival “Zwischentöne” in Engelberg in Switzerland in October 2016.
The title of the piece refers rather to the „aria“ called instrumental pieces as we know them from Italian and German barock than to some stylized opera aria. The typical characteristics of such an “aria” or “air” – a strophe-like melody accompanied by a harmonic structure above a bass ostinato – can be found in my piece, too. A melancholic, in a barock manner ornamented melody in cello, later in viola, is in contrast to an ostinato-motif in violins, polyphonically arranged in the background. A short Coda with a pastoral motif in the high pitched 1.violin ends the piece.
