Notes

  • Program notes:

I composed “Troubled Gardens” with, in mind, certain textures, patterns and color plates, more or less dense, articulated in a rather abrupt fashion, as one can find in paintings by Tapiès, Rothko, and many other modern and contemporary painters, similarly to what I witnessed as a child in my father’s painting style.
I wanted these music blocks to play with no sense of “completion,” in the same way a painter executes each stroke in one skilled gesture with a painter’s knife, without feeling the need to go over these strokes, but rather to observe the unpredictable and imperfect result of that initial gesture.
This led me to revisit the ways I deal with shape in my compositions, and to be more daring about “cutting through matter,” without systematically “ending” one thing before “beginning” another. In this process, I thought of particular figures that cohabit in the same space, rather than music sequences. I approached this piece more like writing in space - temporal, acoustic - rather than treating it like an unfolding musical discourse.
