Resende Bastos, Miguel: A Soldier's Cemetery

    The choir piece A Soldier's Cemetery, by the composer Miguel Resende Bastos, sets the similarly titled poem by John William Streets to music, as part of the project "14 – 18: from poetry to music", by TENSO (the European Network for Professional Chamber choirs). The aim of the project was to bring alive poems from 1914-1918, one of the most turbulent periods in European history – the first World War – in new choral music. Bringing to light known and unknown poems and other texts from that period, by commissioning young and established composers to write new music for chamber choir, based on these texts.

    John William Streets, better known as Will Streets, was an English soldier and poet of the first World War. About his poems, he wrote: "They were inspired while I was in the trenches, where I have been so busy I have had little time to polish them. I have tried to picture some thoughts that pass through a man's brain when he dies. I may not see the end of the poems, but I hope to live to do so. We soldiers have our views of life to express, though the boom of death is in our ears. We try to convey something of what we feel in this great conflict to those who think of us, and sometimes, alas! Mourn our loss." Unfortunately, Will's desire to live to see his poems published was never fulfilled. His body was found in No-Mans land, 10 months after he went missing. This poem is of special significance since it can be interpreted as a reflection on No-Mans land, and these are the ideas and the sentiments that its musical setting tries to reflect on and bring forth.
