Notes

  • Program notes:

Centralia is a town in Pennsylvania that is known for its coal mines. In 1962 a fire broke out just
underneath the city. Toxic smoke began seeping through holes in the ground, and people began
feeling ill. After fighting the fire with no results all residents were relocated 22 years later in
1984. According to estimations, the fire will continue to burn for 200-250 years. The work is
based on field recordings from nearby coal mines in Centralia. The transcribed sounds are used
as musical atoms for idiomatic orchestral writing.
