The title doesn’t refer to any specific painting, rather to an amalgamation of works by several artists from different centuries. The work is in an ABA (slow-fast-slow) form. A1 and A2 are virtual palindromes: the central section, the main body of the work, is quite virtuosic - often for small groups of players - a “concerto for orchestra”. Harmonically, the work is based on the harmonic series and the whole tone scale. The opening fanfares lead to a series of string textures with superimposed wind and brass solos, which develop throughout the piece into a long, woven, often interrupted, melody.
