Notes

  • Program notes:

“A person has to be with the sentence ‘As it should be’. As a priest, a layperson, a monarch, and a retainer, each have their own “as it should be”. If we dissolve the statute, everything will be wrong.”
The implication of the excerpt of “As it should be” by Myōe (1173-1232, Buddhist priest) is neither idolizing the ideal-human being up, nor affirming “as it is”. The conveying message is that, a person should distinguish her/his own situation and consider about what to do. Despite the abolition of the class system in the modern era, there still exists a social hierarchy, and jobs unthinkable in the past are sprouting up in the ever growing, diverse society.
The phrase “I am not a man who try to be salvaged in the future life, just to be ‘As it should be’ in current life” resonate with me without a slight thought of it being outdated. As a priest, he has continuously asked himself the state of “as it should be”. There is one Waka featuring his unaffected aspect. This straight forward proclamation acts as the status quo of “as it should be” as well, is it not?
Aka aka ya, aka aka aka ya, aka aka ya, aka aka aka ya, aka aka ya tsuki (Oh bright bright, Oh bright bright bright, Oh bright bright, Oh bright bright bright, Bright Oh bright moon)
