Notes

  • Program notes:

Echoes in the Stillness was written during my residency with BBC Radio 3 and was something of a departure for me at the time. It was loosely inspired by the work of Wandelweiser composer, Jurg Frey. I had long been transfixed by the beauty of his work and wanted to capture something of the pared-down transparency and spaciousness of his music, making full use of the quartet's ability to sustain slow textures, yet still within my own distinct harmonic language.

Unlike my other music there's very little in the way of melody and the textures are very simple; there's also quite a lot of silence. The title refers to the occasional short repeated notes in the violin, which seemed to suggest themselves as sort of echoes of the long held chords or perhaps of natural sounds heard at night.
