Notes

  • Program notes:

Rain Check was composed in summer 2013 for the Finnish jazz orchestra UMO.
It was first performed in a live broadcast on November 7th, 2013.
After composing mostly for string orchestras in recent years, I enjoyed returning to the body of the jazz orchestra and the possibilities it offers, especially the use of the rhythm section.
I started out deciding that I wanted to write a happy anthem-like composition with a strong rhythmic drive, yet, deriving from mainstream big band writing, I wanted to use contrapunctal orchestral textures as I would employ with a classical orchestra.
For many years it has been my endeavor to combine contemporary classical elements in my music with elements of jazz and ethnic music.
In Rain Check I included in a humorous fashion also hints towards pop music.
In my view, all means are valid, if the result sounds inspiring.
The name ‘Rain Check’ is derived from an American expression for a promise that has been made some time ago and is now being redeemed.
