Notes

  • Program notes:

Landscape with figures is a work presented at the end of the three-year artistic research project Between Instrument and everyday sound. Landscape with figures I was presented as an endless sound installation with more than 1000 continuously recombined sound fragments. Sounds range from concrete surround field recordings from the city of Bergen, through animals, water and various objects to instrumental sounds, composed with morphings, microtonal tunings and spatial distributions. The search to place the listener in the middle of an artificial world continued through Landscape with figures II written for Song Circus and Oslo Sinfonietta. The singers and musicians are distributed around the audience interacting with the first sound installation with composed fragments. Their fragments range from a few seconds to minutes, and many possible orders could be imagined.

  • Technical specs:

Landscape with figures IIa for 5 voices and electronics (2013) is not an opera in the conventional sense. The score contains sketches of setups where the audience is surrounded by speakers and musicians. It will be best suited for a flexible venue without fixed seatings. The work has been written in collaboration with the vocal ensemble Song Circus, who have performed this work on multiple occasions and will be will to take part in an ISCM performance with more than two singer at their own cost. http://songcircus.no/

    ELECTRONICS
(Microphones for singers, 8 speakers, subwoofer, Mac, Soundcard with ADAT)

    EQUIPMENT
Sound is controlled from MaxMsp. Direct amplification of the singers should go through a mixer/soundcard routing, panned to a speaker near each singer. Sending pure amplification through the computer will give too much of a processing delay.

5 Shure Beta 58 microphones (for singers)
Macintosh with MaxMsp and Ircam software (Spat and others)
Soundcard with compatible ADAT converter (5 in, 8.1 out)
    8 speakers (L'Acoustic 108 or Genelec 1030)
    Subwoofer
    Necessary cables
