Notes

  • Program notes:

Much of the musical material of this short orchestral study is informed, to varying degrees, by the
Shepard tone illusion, an auditory illusion that creates the impression that a tone is continuously
ascending or descending yet, in reality, never gets any higher or lower. I am not the first composer
to get excited by the musical possibilities of Shepard tones, but I have tried to apply the concept in
novel ways to not just the pitches (as is typical), but also to the other parameters of the music. The
work borrows its title from a short poem by Andrea Cohen.
