    “Hommage a Skalkottas” is inspired by the work “15 little variations for piano” of Nikos Skalkottas, an Arnold Schoenberg’s distinguished student. The composition consists of 15 little variations for one percussionist and a string quartet. Every variation explores different possibilities of developing the initial theme. Various compositional techniques and expressive means, such as microtones, timbral variations, dodecaphonic variations and contrapuntal writing are used in this composition. The work is written in memoriam Nikos Skalkottas, as 2019 is a year dedicated to his memory in his birth country, Greece.

  • Technical specs: 

    No electronic equipment needed. The work is written for a string quartet and a percussionist player, who needs the following: a triangle, a suspended cymbal (soft timpani mallets, a bow, two soft heave marimba mallets, brushes and drum sticks) , a large tam tam, a glockenspiel, and a vibraphone (4 soft mallets throughout).
