    Acousmatic electroacoustic sounds may appear abstract rather than clearly connect to real-world sources, yet can be imbued with a sense of character through their gait – or literally the manner of moving. In Dusk’s Gait, ambisonics spatialisation and custom-made sound transformation and analysis methods are used to create tangible spatial objects as materials for the composition and musical structure.

    The work has a partly narrative form as well as an overarching appreciation of the natural world: as dusk falls, a fictional habitat of fictional creatures is let loose, celebrating moments of real nature that may easily expire.

  • Technical specs: 

    Format: Higher-order ambisonics (adaptable multichannel format).

    Technical needs: loudspeaker array

    Dusk’s Gait is composed in a higher-order ambisonics multichannel format allowing a flexible performance setup. Sketches of the loudspeaker layout are therefore not included in this technical specification. Rather, here are some key points:

    -The work should be played over a minimum of 6 loudspeakers in a horizontal layout, (plus sub bass), and can accommodate up to 64 loudspeakers in a 3D array.

    -Geometry of the layout:

    •should be surrounding the audience, where loudspeakers are equally spaced.
    •can be circular, oval or rectangular, but not ‘near and far’.
    •If other works in a concert need loudspeakers placed at varying distances, these can be included in the performance of Dusk’s Gait as long as there is a core of at least 6 loudspeakers surrounding the audience as specified above.

    •Loudspeakers: should be the same type (power and frequency response).

    •A suitable multichannel version of the work will be provided (decoded) for the WMD concert loudspeaker array.

    Technical needs: computer and audio interface

    -The work needs to be played from a computer and audio interface suitable for the loudspeaker array.
