Ondřej Štochl - A Spring from the Cave of Helplessness (Pramen z jeskyně bezmoci) for string quartet – 2016

This composition is loosely based on my earlier work ‚‚proPASti‘‘ (a cryptogram – for english ‚chasms‘) for oboe and strings which was inspired by my experience with people with autism spektrum disorders. Despite a fairly well developed system of care, their privacy often needs to fit into a small cave between social chasms. Genuine interest in their inner lives is usually replaced by efforts to influence their visible behaviour – as a society, we simply can´t do more than that. The caves of helplessness, forcedly closed mental spaces, are becoming home to more and more people – including those without disabilities.
I wish everyone who is becoming unwillingly entrapped like this could come to trust their spring. Because the spring is deepening with every person who comes to drink from it. They want its purity. They want to expandtheir perspective of the ordinary and soften their perception. Perhaps it could wash away many of their addictions... Knowledge of its necessity is the only path leading out of the cave: a different way taking you throught places you wouldn´t expect.
