Simon, John

Biography

John Simon studied piano while at school in South Africa. He moved to London, studying composition at Trinity College of Music and the Royal College of Music.
He returned to South Africa in 1979 and wrote a series of orchestral pieces that were responses to the political events of the time. Subsequent works were more eclectic in origin, drawing on atonality, serialism and an individualised tonality. Rhythmic vitality is a frequent characteristic, especially of his later work.
A range of his orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal compositions have been performed and broadcast widely in South Africa and internationally.
