Lill, Märt-Matis 




The output of Märt-Matis Lill reflects deep interest in Oriental culture and philosophic tradition. His music combines modern Western sonoristic devices as well as refined and concentrated sound perception common to Oriental music. Unpredictable succession of sound events dominates in Lill’s music. Oftentimes recited lyrics and music is connected in his scores, many of his works have been inspired by poetic images. Lill was born in 1975 in Tallinn. He studied in Estonian Academy of Music in as a student Prof. Lepo Sumera and in Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Veli-Matti Puumala. He has have participated at master courses with Louis Andriessen, Michael Jarrell, Luca Francesconi, Magnus Lindberg and Hanspeter Kyburz, IRCAM's summer courses and the summer courses of Centre Acanthes. He has also studied japanology, sinology and philosophy at the Helsinki University. Since 2014 he is the chairman of the Estonian Composers' Union. At the moment Lill is writing an opera about the World War I, based on the accounts of the soldiers and civilians affected. It is commission of the opera house Vanemuine and will be premiered in 2017 in Tartu, Estonia.
