Johansons, Voldemārs

Voldemars Johansons works with sound and information in the forms of composition and installation. His work explores perception and reality in visible and audible domains, physicality, spatiality and the nature of experience.

In 2002 he is commissioned (with group MAIZE) to create an audiovisual environment for the Latvia’s exhibition in Architecture biennale "NEXT", Venice. In 2007 Johansons receives a degree from the Royal Conservatoire, Institute of Sonology, where he studied composition and electronic music with Paul Berg, Joel Ryan and Kees Tazelaar, graduating with thesis “Information Structures for Organization of Sonic Events” that researches use of spatial metaphors for organization of sound.

In 2007 the collaboration proposal with Kristaps Gelzis & Ilze Mikelsone “History - Tactile” for the architectural memorial of victims of Soviet occupation in Riga is awarded the first prize.

After graduation his research interests address organic combination of acoustic information and spatial forms in creation of sonic environments and sculptures, examining the joint morphology of acoustic, visual and spatial domains. Since 2009 Johansons teaches sonic art at the Liepaja University department of New Media Studies, and works as researcher at the Art Research laboratory.
