Biography

James Beattie studied analysis and theory with Richard Meale and electronic music with Tristram Cary at the University of Adelaide in the 1980s, when he created the soundtrack for a South Australian Film Corporation documentary, and composed and performed incidental music for radio and theatre productions in Adelaide, while working as a music presenter-producer for the ABC. In 1993 he was appointed Artistic Administrator of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, where he executive-produced the ARIA Award winning CD Simple Gifts featuring Yvonne Kenny. He has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Melbourne, and taught media and philosophy before returning to composing in 2004.
