Estonian National Section


Estonian Composer´s Union is 82 years old institution. It´s membership contains both professional composers and musicologists. The number of members has remaind ca 100 for recent years. Estonian Composers Union joined ISCM as Estonian national member at the ISCM General Assembly in april 2005.

As every year, also 2008 was ECU´s main output annual festival “Estonian Music Days”. It is organised by our Union since 1979 and is at the moment one of the most important new music events in Estonia. It was held on 18-23 of april 2008, altogether 18 concerts/events were organised and over 30 new works from Estonian composers received their premiers during that week.

Besides its´ usual annual activities like Estonian Music Days and other seasonal concerts/events has Estonian National ISCM Section together with Romanian National section organised a concert of on Estonian contemporary music ensemble – Ensemble U: - in Bucharest on the 12th December of 2008 in the MEIDIAN festival.

The concert program consisted both Estonian and Romanian new music and had success among the festival audience. The concert-trip was made possible by cooperation and support from both sides.

Further plans which are already in progress include founding 2-3 small composers´ residence facilities all over Estonia for ISCM member countries´ composers as well as organising an ISCM Day during the Estonian Music Days 2011 when Tallinn holds the position of European Cultural Capital.
