2005/2006 Annual report to ISCM - Greek Section

The 2005/2006 the ISCM-Greek Section and the Greek Composers' Union (GCU) that serves as its hosting organisation has tried to expand further its activities and to infuse them with an international perspective.
To this end, more than 30 works by internationally sound composers from 10 different countries have been presented in our concert series in 2005/2006.
A series of negotiations with different public and/or private organisations and institutes had a very satisfactory outcome.
'Athens Megaron' was an organisation that fostered its collaboration with the GCU-ISCM Greek Section, providing the opportunity to young composers to present their work in the workshops and commissioning others to new works. Athens Megaron provided the concert hall and financial support for the realization of the Workshops of Contemporary Music for young composers, organized since 1999 by the GCU-ISCM Greek Section. The official guest was G. Kancheli who served as the president of the jury. In addition, so far in 2006 four concerts have been organised with different thematic links, including commissions for new works to Greek composers, such as G. Kyriakakis, I. Valet and E. Markoulaki and thematic concerts such as Contemporary Music Milestones with works of J. Cage, St. Reich, G. Couroupos, B. Jolas, G. Kancheli, Postmodernwith works of L. Kanaris, G. Kyriakakis, K. Lygnos, Ch. Xanthoudakis, Al. Chryssanidis, Musical and Instrumental Theatre with works of I. Valet, G. Drositis, Al. Kalogeras, and Greek Female Composers with works of M. Sfakianaki, E. Markoulaki, E. Kikou, Th. Baltsavia, M. - Ch. Krithara and Skarkou.
The collaboration with the Institutes of Foreign Languages in Athens, such as Goethe Institut-Athen, Hellenic-American Union etc, resulted in a series of concerts with thematic links, i.e., "Postmodern - Ethnic - ?xotic ?nstruments", Music Plus (Music and Poetry), Music of the World, Neoromantism, Streams, Visuals, Sound Marathon, etc. These concerts include works of important composers from foreign countries besides the ones from Greece. In that way, an interchange in the cultural perspectives of the music creation was achieved.
An ongoing collaboration with the Hellenic-American Union, Benakis Museum, Nakas Conservatory, "Apopsi" Literature and Arts center, State Opera concerts, Conservatory of Classic and Contemporary Music, N. Mantzaros Conservatory, Musical Horizons Conservatory, has created the opportunity to perform works from Greek composers and organise a series of lectures and analyses of contemporary art, in general. As an example, in July 7, 2006 a concert dedicated to Volanakis' ouvre (theatre director) was held in "Petra Theatre", where music from G. Kouroupos and Th. Antoniou written for Volanakis' theatre performances was presented.
Moreover, we have facilitated and organised composition competition in the memory of Dimitris Dragatakis. The recipients of the awards of the "D. Dragratakis Composition Competition 2006" were: D. Doxakis (1st Prize), A. Anestis (2nd Prize) and G. Dousis (3rd Prize).
The important endeavour of the EEM/GCU Magazine (renamed from "Music Antiphonon" to "Music Polytonon") continued with increasing success publishing a magazine which refers to the contemporary music events, both in Greece and abroad. This is organised and run by the GCU (with Mr. K. Lignos being the magazine Director) and serves as an information and communication channel for the contemporary artists.
Furthermore, there is an ongoing collaboration with the Patras Municipal Conservatory regarding the Festival of Contemporary Music Days (September 7-10, 2006), which includes composition workshops for young composers, electroacoustic music events, lectures and exhibitions. This year, this event is included in the Patras Cultural Capital of Europe 2006 programme.
Finally, with the collaboration of State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, the Culture 2005 workshop was organised on a European basis, under the Programme Framework Culture 2005. The workshop included six young composers from Italy, Greece, and Ireland.
The board of GCU-ISCM Greek Section consists of Theodore Antoniou, President; George Kouroupos, Vice President; Josef Papadatos, Secretary; Alexandros Mouzas, Treasurer; Iakovos Konitopoulos, special secretary; Leontios Hadjileontiadis, ISCM Greek Section Responsible; Christos Zerbinos, Curator; Georgia Molfeta, Member, and Leonidas Kanaris, Member. and for further information, or visit ; .
