The Australian Section for ISCM is co-ordinated by the Australian Music Centre (AMC), the national service organisation for music by Australian composers. During the past 6 months since ISCM WMD in Switzerland the AMC has been involved in a range of activities in addition to its usual work as a music information centre.

The AMC�s core funding is from the Music Board of the Australia Council for the Arts (accounting for some 45% of the Centre�s budget). The funding has been renewed for the years 2004-2006 with a modest increase; however the increase reflects the Music Board�s support for the AMC�s plans to develop its facility to render its substantial collection of contemporary compositions in the online environment. The AMC has embarked upon this significant project which will take some time and further financial investment to realise.

The remainder of AMC�s income (some 55% of the total budget) is from sales, memberships, donations and sponsorships. These funds continue to support Australian music through the library, information services, publications, website and international promotions.

Composer development activities and promotion of composers continue to be a major focus for the Centre. The AMC, in collaboration with SOUNZ, the Centre for New Zealand Music (with support from the Australia Council, Creative New Zealand, and the Australasian Performing Right Association � APRA), established the Trans-Tasman composer exchange residency in 2003 to further develop music relationships between the two countries. Currently, negotiations are taking place between an Australian composer and a New Zealand host organisation for the 2005 residency. The 2003 residency involved NZ composer Gareth Farr in residence with the 6-part vocal ensemble The Song Company, with the resulting work being premiered on the 1 February 2005 at Government House in Sydney. The performance was recorded for broadcast on ABC Classic FM and NZ Concert FM. The 2004 residency saw Australian composer James Ledger spending time with the Christchurch Symphony in New Zealand, and working with the orchestra to produce a new work for performance later in 2005.

In November 2004, 5 young composers gathered in Hobart, Tasmania, to hear the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra rehearse and perform works prepared for the Australian Composers Orchestral Forum, under the guidance of composer tutors Andrew Schultz and Brenton Broadstock, and conductor Ken Young. The Forum is a partnership between the AMC and Symphony Australia, the national service organisation for professional orchestras, and the project has been running for 23 years. The composer participates were Australians David Chisholm, Alicia Grant and Andrian Pertout, New Zealand composer Anthony Young, and Malaysian composer Adeline Wong.

The MODART composer development project was initiated in 2003 as a partnership between the AMC and The Song Company, Australia�s leading vocal ensemble. In 2004, young composers from around the country were asked to contribute works for workshop (held in February 2005) for later performances in September 2005. The workshops and concert are being recorded for broadcast by ABC Classic FM. The 2005 project gained funding support from APRA and this project will now take place every 2 years.

Outstanding achievements in the Australian music community continue to be recognised though the annual Australian Classical Music Awards, a partnership between AMC and APRA, and the Paul Lowin Prizes (held every 2 or 3 years). Those honoured at the event included composer Miriam Hyde, who was honoured for her long-term contribution to the Australian community through her work as a composer, a pianist, and a teacher. Miriam sadly passed away at the age of 92 in January 2005.

In November 2004, the AMC in association with Perpetual Trustees presented the Paul Lowin Prizes, the richest prizes for composition in Australia. Liza Lim won the the $25,000 Paul Lowin Orchestral Prize for her work Ecstatic Architecture, which was premiered as part of the opening season of the Disney Hall in Los Angeles in 2004. Andrew Ford was judged winner of the $15,000 Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize for his work Learning to Howl. Composers Gerard Brophy and Rosalind Page were Highly Commended in the Orchestral category.

The Australian Music Centre is greatly assisted by the New Music Network, representing 15 of Australia�s new music ensembles and presenting organisations, which enables close co-operation and co-ordination of the functions of creation, presentation, and promotion of new music. The Network, based in Sydney, continues its work of promoting the concerts of its individual members, developing audiences across a broad range of new music practice. The Network�s annual concert series continues to attract audiences who respond well to the varied programs of new music presented and plans are underway in 2005 for an interstate performer exchange program that will encourage activity across Australia. The Network is currently assisting other ensembles and organisations to form networks in other capital cities in Australia to enhance promotion of new music nationally.

In December 2004, the Network also presented the 6th annual Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address which was broadcast on ABC national radio. The Address provides an important vehicle for commentary on issues and challenges in the new music scene, and in 2004 was delivered by Melbourne lawyer and activist Julian Burnside, who spoke eloquently about philanthropy, and the need for new creative work to be supported. Julian himself has commissioned new works from composers, and is also active as an advocate for human rights issues.

The Australian ISCM section has substantially increased its activities in 2004 and 2005 in the Oceanic and Asian regions and will continue to work to enhance relationships in music both locally and internationally.
