Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

The public activities planned by NewMusicSA in 2020 were dramatically impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the projects lined up for the year were continuously delayed and postponed. First just by some months, but with the evolution of the pandemic, everything got pushed forward to 2021.
Less subjected to the impacts of the pandemic, NewMusicSA published in 2020 the Bulletin for the activities of the previous year, 2019. Articulated around the theme of resilience, the issue number 18 (ISSN No. 1684-0399) was edited by François de Villiers, Malcolm Dedman and Douglas Scott and contained News, Essays, Reports, Members´ New Works and selected Scores.
However, despite the decrease of public activities, 2020 was a busy year for NewMusicSA:
In terms of long term project planning, NewMusicSA bid to host the World New Music Days 2023 in Johannesburg and Soweto. This bid was voted favorably at the ISCM Extraordinary AGM in June 2020.
In the financial side, NewMusicSA successfully fundraised for project activities (which were pushed to 2021, as mentioned above).
Lastly, the organization incorporated two staff members to develop work around projects and fundraising.

  • Please describe your organization's research activities over the past year:
The main research activity developed by NewMusicSA in 2020 was around the feasibility of hosting the World New Music Days in South Africa in 2023. This included an extensive research into logistical aspects (event production, transport, security, lodging, conference and concert venues, service providers, etc.), artistic programming, and funders, sponsors and partners. This inception report formed the basis of NewMusicSA´s bid to host the World New Music Days in in Johannesburg and Soweto in late 2023.
