Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

As a large School of Music (nearly 500 music majors) within a large university (12,000 students), Stephen F. Austin State University maintains a vibrant and active calendar of performances and scholarly activities. Virtually all of our major ensembles (band, orchestra, choir, jazz, etc.) feature contemporary works on most programs, and student recitals (many dozens of them) feature contemporary works and collaborations with composers both on campus and off.

Furthermore, speaking as the ISCM representative member for the entire state of Texas, there are an incalculable number of contemporary music events taking place around the state at all times. Texas is home to many world-class music programs and some of the most internationally acclaimed opera companies, symphonies, composers, and presenting organizations.

  • Please describe your organization's research activities over the past year:
In addition to the research activities of the faculty, the SFA School of Music oversees a unique online masters of music composition & theory degree. In 2019 students in this program wrote theses on topics including Swedish metal bands, film scoring, the creative evolution of musical ideas, invented instruments using water, narrative agency in music, jazz improvisation, sound design and nature, Broadway musicals, mixed-influence compositions, and adaptation of choral works for band.
