Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

As a large and diverse School of Music (almost 500 music majors), we present hundreds of concerts each year from chamber and solo recitals to operas, symphonies, band, and jazz. Most of these concerts include contemporary music. Further, we are supporters of the Texas New Music Ensemble, a traveling group of flexible instrumentation devoted entirely to presenting new music by Texas-based composers. Our large ensembles (particularly in band) participate in consortium commissions with some of the top composers in the USA.

Most particularly, though, SFA's membership in ISCM is specifically for the purpose of representing the entire state of Texas (a population of over 28 million). Thus, our leadership has led to countless collaborations within the state that would not have happened otherwise. We have regularly fostered faculty exchange lectures between various universities, and introduced student composers to the works of many ISCM composers.

  • Please describe your organization's research activities over the past year:
As a university, we are constantly active in research. Our program has overseen 7 masters theses in 2018 covering a wide variety of analytical and compositional topics from videogame scoring to hip-hop, to genre-mixing, etc. Further, the State of Texas (which we represent) contains some of the worlds most prestigious music institutions (University of Texas, Rice University, University of North Texas, Southern Methodist University, etc.). Some of the best research across all topics in music is being done every day in Texas.
