MUSIKAGILEAK is a non-profit association which aims at developing and promoting Basque music from all epochs with a particular emphasis on contemporary creation. In order to achieve the general goals defined in its rules, MUSIKAGILEAK promotes activities such as concerts, competitions, workshops, panel discussions, publications and has established agreements with Basque institutions and musical agents. MUSIKAGILEAK is a member of ISCM (International Society of Contemporary Music) and EHMBE (Basque Country Music Office).

The main activity of MUSIKAGILEAK is an annual festival called Musikagileak Contemporary Music Circuit. In 2018 this festival reached its ninth edition and included a total of ten concerts that were held from September to November in the three main cities of the Basque Country. The participating artists were:

    -Bilbao Symphony Orchestra
    -Alfonso Gómez (piano)
    -Trío Zukan
    -Ensemble Sinkro
    -Bretón Quartet
    -Oñati Chamber Choir
    -The Pamplonesa Band
    -Hanatsu Miroir Ensemble
    -Electronic Music Concert
    -Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete (guitar)

MUSIKAGILEAK also organizes a composition course, in which each year invites a consecrated figure of European music. In 2018, the guest composer was Ramon Lazkano, whose work "Hitzaurre bi" was performed at the end of the course by the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.

2018 held another edition of "Wake up the sound!", a project that involved more than 150 children from different schools of the Basque Country and three young creators of contemporary music. Throughout a whole school year, the children got to know and experimented with many aspects of the "non-conventional" music styles, with the aim to awaken their inner creativity. The ideas that came up during various games and exercises were collected and later used to write, in collaboration with the three composers, six new pieces that would be performed at a big final concert by the children themselves together with a chamber orchestra. The project had as points of reference the composers Jose Maria Usandizaga (1887-1915) and Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), who started to write music in their childhood and who died very young.

In addition to these activities, MUSIKAGILEAK carries out constant consultancy work for its members, catalogs its music, promotes the internationalization of Basque composers and maintains collaborations with different musical institutions in the area.
