Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

Nieuw Geneco is the Dutch professional association for composers. Nieuw Geneco stimulates the development and the future of composing, improves the economic and sociocultural climate for composers and is a source of knowledge and inspiration for composers, music professionals and the public.

Dutch Composers Association Nieuw Geneco acts as the Netherlands ISCM Section. Many international activities have taken place in 2017, such as the annual composers and network meeting at the international forum Classical NEXT in may, composers meeting at festival November Music.

2017 was a memorable year with many ups and downs. For example, we were able to welcome many prize winners from national and international competitions. Is the deplorable position of artists in the Netherlands (finally) firmly on the political agenda, we were startled by affairs at BumaStemra. Meanwhile, while we continued relentlessly with the advocacy of the Good Cause. More and more often in coalition with other professional organizations and networks.

With the Composer Monitor 2017 and with active lobby, on different fronts at the same time, we achieve steady results. We have been asked by the Performing Arts Fund, the Council for Culture and the Social Economic Council to contribute to fairer mission relations and job market questions. For example, we worked on the improvement of the fee table and the Code of Good Commissioning / Fair Practice. And Nieuw Geneco was actively involved in the Labor Market Agenda committee of Kunsten'92 and was part of the work sessions of the Kunstenbond, which led to the establishment of a broad Creative Coalition.

At the end of the year the Council for Culture published the Sector Analysis Music. The Council gives an integral picture, in which pop, urban and world music are also being viewed for the first time. We applaud the integral view. But also ask for specific attention to the special features in classical and contemporary music. To strengthen our lobby, Nieuw Geneco is co-founder of the Classical Music Coalition and the Jazz / World / contemporary Coalition. Our representatives at Buma / Stemra represent the interests of 'serious' music under difficult circumstances. New Geneco has succeeded the committee 'Front' in life, to improve the collection for serious music. New Geneco has been bitten in bringing about a special arrangement for our composers in the harmony / brass band / brass. Together with ECSA we have achieved success with the EU Directive for the copyright. We use Platform Makers to lobby for legal opportunities to set industry guidelines for author's fees.

Collective promotion took shape thanks to our ambassadors. Mayke Nas - our National laureate Composer - was a guest at many public interviews and discussions. Via radio, website and social media she put many special compositions in the spotlight. Jaap van Zweden stirred like Ambassador Dutch Composers. He honored in the Quote and various other media the current generation of Dutch composers, as equivalents of Bach and Beethoven.

We were present at the international classical forum Classical NEXT, the Buma Classical Convention and the 2nd edition of the Dutch Chamber Music Day. We were guests at Codarts Rotterdam, November Music Den Bosch and the networking drink in the Donemus tower in The Hague. New Geneco has been asked as representative of the Netherlands in International Society Contemporary Music (ISCM). We have also been asked by Dutch Performing Arts opportunities for composers to explore at the ISCM Music Days Vancouver, Donauesschinger and Huddersfield. Our international network is growing. Above all, more and more composers become members and we are very happy with that: because more members means a stronger Society.
