  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

During the year 2017, the ISCM - Flemish Section focussed almost exclusively on the transition of the membership of the ISCM from ISCM-Vlaanderen vzw to MATRIX New Music Centre.
This included the following preparatory activities:
    - finalizing all activities of ISCM-Vlaanderen vzw, including the relocation of the archive
    - putting together the application of MATRIX New Music Centre to be accepted as a member of the ISCM and official representative of Flanders within the ISCM
    - sketching the outlines of a renewed approach towards the function, role and possibilities of the ISCM - Flemish Section, in collaboration with a representative sample of stakeholders, Flanders Arts Institute and the Board of Directors of MATRIX

In November a Call for Works was launched in order to compile a submission for the Call for Works for the 2018 Beijing World Music Days. The jury consisted of Daan Janssens (composer), Ann Eysermans (composer, performer) and Klaas Coulembier (musicologist). (More information: see below)

At the World Music Days 2017 in Vancouver, Canada, the Flemish Section was represented by Rebecca Diependaele (general co-ordinator of MATRIX) as First Delegate and Stef Coninx (Flanders Arts Institute) as Second Delegate. Rebecca gave a short presentation for the General Assembly about MATRIX and its goals and activities. Also, she wrote a report about the festival for the ISCM website.
To enable the composers of both selected pieces (Frederik Neyrinck and Aurélie Lierman) and 2014 Young Composers Award Winner Stefan Prins to attend the World Music Days and the performance of their pieces, a travel grant from the Flemish Government was applied for and granted.

After MATRIX had been accepted by the ISCM as member section for Flanders, all former members of ISCM-Vlaanderen were informed about the transfer of the membership and the outlines of the plans for 2018. Also, the MATRIX website was completed with pages about ISCM (see and a new newsletter was set up.
