Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

The year saw notable achievements and changes. Foremost among the achievements was the launch of our new website The intention of the website is to promote global access to our archive in order to promote performances of Welsh music internationally. Tŷ Cerdd is delighted to be working in partnership with the National Library of Wales and with Faber Music on this project.

During the year Tŷ Cerdd became an Arts Council of Wales delegated distributor of lottery funds and five schemes have been devised which support Tŷ Cerdd’s mission to promote the creation and performance of Welsh music. A considerable amount of the funding has already been committed for the commissioning of new music. Non-professional societies, festivals and ensembles have been quick to use this particular strand and the value of partnership funding which the scheme attracts ensures considerable investment in the creation of new music. Tŷ Cerdd continues to support amateur music makers throughout Wales and has distributed lottery funding to attractive youth projects in south and west Wales.

Tŷ Cerdd continues to work to develop music for young people through its support for the five national youth ensembles. The National Youth Training Band was established at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the National Youth Choir of Wales travelled to Argentina as part of Patagonia 150. During its tour the choir gave performances to capacity audiences in Buenos Aires, Trelew and Gaiman and was pleased to perform with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales which was visiting at the same time.

Tŷ Cerdd Publications has been a new venture and is proving very successful. There is a growing roster of composers wishing to be published by Tŷ Cerdd and a new member of staff is committed to the work of making available composers’ manuscripts in legible Sibelius editions.

Tŷ Cerdd is pleased to have established a Memorandum of Understanding with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales which forms the basis for a collaborative, and mutually beneficial, promotional agreement. A major development was the formation by Tŷ Cerdd of ISCM-Wales. In previous years all submissions to the ISCM World Music Days has been through the British arm of the organisation. For the World Music Days in Vancouver 2017, Welsh composers will, for the first time, be given the opportunity of submitting through ISCM Wales.
