  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

The New Music Coop organized two concerts and a seminar in collaboration with Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Swedish performer/composer Ivo Nilsson (trombone) and Turkish soprano Pinar Ucman Karacali. First concert of this collaboration took place in the Near East University’s Concert Hall (Nicosia, CYPRUS) on April 4, 2015. The concert program consisted of works by Swedish and Turkish composers. Ahmet Yurur, Onur Nurcan, Alper Maral and Erman Ozdemir were among the participating Turkish composers from the Coop.

The same group of musicians executed a seminar at the university’s Music School on the following day (April 5, 2015). Stockholm Saxophone Quartet with Ivo Nilsson covered topics such as extended playing techniques and their notation while Turkish soprano Pinar Ucman Karacali lectured on taking part in contemporary music as a singer. Concert program of April 4, 2015 was repeated at the Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul – TURKEY on April 7, 2015.

New Music Coop Combo Ensemble carried out its meetings and rehearsals on a regular basis, mostly in Istanbul. The Combo Ensemble, essentially consisting of trumpet, piano, klasik kemence (traditional Turkish instrument), viola, double bass and percussion, discussed potential future projects and rehearsed selected works for upcoming scheduled concerts. Rehearsals included Ahmet Yurur’s work-in-progress chamber opera “Gul Baba” with the ensemble practicing newly written scenes and fragments.

Erman Ozdemir and Asim Ozdemir participated in the 33rd Asian Composers League International Festival and Conference in Philippines between 6 and 11 November, 2015. Erman Ozdemir’s piece BIAS was performed in Chamber Music Concert 1 and the STRING QUARTET No. 2 by Asim Ozdemir was performed in Young Composers Prize Concert. Ahmet Yurur and Erman Ozdemir, as Turkish Delegates, fulfilled their duties as well.

A research article, by Onur Nurcan and two other colleagues, entitled “Outlooks of Conservatory Piano Majors Toward the Use of Turkish Composers’ Works in Applied Piano Lessons” was published in the Journal of Educational and Instructional Studies in the World. The article was written in English language and can be viewed at

The New Music Coop was not yet the ISCM Turkey Section in 2015. However, two of its members, namely Ahmet Yurur and Alper Maral, were also in Borusan ISCM committee which was the official Turkey Section at the time. Upon the announcement that Borusan would withdraw from this position by the end of 2015, the ExCom of the New Music Coop took a resolution unanimously to be candidate for the same status and preparations were initiated in this direction.
