    Report of activities, 2015 – Hungarian Composers’ Union (Hungarian Section of ISCM)

    List of events and composers:

    06/05/2015 – joint concert of VENI Ensemble (ISCM Slovak Section) and THReNSeMBle (ISCM Hungarian Section) – Hungarian Radio, Marble Hall
    Our collaboration with the ISCM Slovak Section is continued:
    The joint ensembles of VENI (from Bratislava) and THReNSeMBle (from Budapest) performed a succesful concert at the ISCM WMD 2013 in Kosice. Now we could invite our Slovak partners to Budapest and perform two pieces from the program that has been played at the ISCM Festival.
    The Slovak and the Hungarian Sections have been collaborating for many years. Due to the successful collaboration both partners felt that the Kosice-concert should be repeated in Hungary. Finally we created a new program and only two pieces were performed in Budaőpest from the Kosice program and we rather asked one Slovak and one Hungarian composers to write a new piece for the event. The program this time consisted of two world premieres by Máté Balogh and Daniel Matej especially composed for this concert. One special performance was Doppler Wobbler by Ivo Nilsson for viola, bassoon and ensemble. The soloists were two Hungarian professors of the Liszt Academy who actually sent bassoon and viola students to the VENI Academy project in November, 2014.

    Febr. 2015 – ECSA General Assembly – Creators’ Conference

    10/12/2015 – workshop of VENI Academy – Liszt Academy of Music
    ISCM Slovak Section creates a workshop called 4x4 in March 2016. As a preliminary event they visited the Liszt Academy where we organized a meeting for students. VENI musicians and staff presented their past activity and they also practiced for two hours with the Hungarian students. This workshop was organized by ISCM Hungarian Section who also shared the call for scores of the project among their membership.
    In March, 2016 young musicians and the selected composer will travel to Bratislava where the final workshop will take place.

    Magyar Zeneművészeti Társaság (Hungarian Art Music Society) and the Hungarian Composers’ Union (ISCM Hungarian Section) co-organizes their “Mini Festival” regularly. This year our section urged that Hungarian performers play pieces from West-Balcanic partners:

    Ivan Brklacic (Serbia): Kuvada
    Nina Perovic (Montenegro): Sonata for Flute, Clarinet and Piano
    Zoran Eric (Serbia): Senario

    Benedek Istvánffy Prize named after the 18th century Hungarian composer.
    The Hungarian Composers’ Union founded the Benedek Istvánffy Prize named after the 18th century Hungarian composer. The yearly award goes to a composer below 40 for a major composition performed the previous year. The Board of the Union decided to set up a Board of Trustees from three members of the Union who listen and read all the applications and suggest one (or two) composer(s) for the prize. The final decision is done by the Board of the Union every January. This year’s prize went ot András Gábor Virágh for his one-act opera entitled Femme fatale 2200111XXG
    Miklós Orszáczky Prize – same as Instvánffy but for popular music – stronger connection to pop and jazz composers (but major pieces).
    We were happy that our popular music composer members suggested a new prize for their side, too. So we could establish the Miklós Orszáczky Prize that goes to a composer for a major pop or jazz composition every year. This is at the same time a good way to connect the composers of different genres. The prize was given to a complete concert-program (Nocturne) also published on CD. The composer is the talented saxophonist-composer Kristóf Bacsó.
    Zoltán Kodály Scholarship – we are delegate
    However, the cultural government changed the structure of their support, our Union is still among the organizations that proposes names for different National Prizes and Scholarships. We also have a delegate in the jury of the Zoltán Kodály Scholarship which is given to young composers and musicologists yearly.
    Publishing scores thanks to the work of Board for Support of Music Publishing of the Hungarian Composers' Union – ca. 15 scores each year
    The Hungarian Composers’ Union is the manager of the equity which has a certain amount of interest every year. This interest must be used to publish contemporary Hungarian music. The Board for Support of Music Publishing of the Hungarian Composers' Union could give money to ca. 15 publications the previous years.
