Annual Report

  • Year:
  • Please describe your organization’s activities over the past year, including concerts, commissions, collaborations, publications:

In 2015, the Board of ISCM Britain met 4 times and was chaired by composer Mark Bowden with support from the Vice Chair, Annie Mahtani (also a composer). Pierre-Alexandre Tremblay was re-elected to a 2nd term on the Board. Board member Vanessa Reed (from PRS for Music Foundation) was replaced by common consent by her colleague Naomi Belshaw.

The ISCM Britain Board agreed criteria for submissions for the World Music Days, which included an explicit requirement for composers to submit works themselves (rather than via a publisher) and also a prioritisation of composers for whom attending an international music festival of such status would represent a significant career development. Accessing funding to support composers to attend the World Music Days and thus attend rehearsals, engage in networking and reap the many benefits of being part of such an international gathering remains challenging, however, particularly given the need to maintain continuity of attendance at the General Assembly and thus strategic input into ISCM’s future.

For the 2015 World Music Days in Ljubljana, Nina Whiteman’s work The Galaxy Rotation Problem was selected and presented and Nina was able to be present at the World Music Days. The ISCM World Music Days in Ljubljana were also attended by Natalia Franklin Pierce, a member of the Sound and Music team. During her attendance – and as a result of discussions dating back some years – it was agreed that a trial Composer Networking Event would be convened during the World Music Days in 2016 in Tongyeong, South Korea. This will be covered in the 2016 report (although, at time of writing, I am very happy to report that it was a great success!)
