The ISCM Canadian Section Report 2012/13

Bid for 2017 WNMDs in Vancouver: From late 2011 through 2012 and 2013 the ISCM Canadian Section, with its parent organization, the Canadian League of Composers, worked towards preparing its bid for the 2017 World New Music Days & General Assembly, proposed to take place in Vancouver. Starting in the fall of 2011 we assembled a Task Force based in Vancouver and including past ISCM Canadian Section Presidents and others from the community with festival experience to study the feasibility of this project. We developed detailed budgets, discussed our ideas for a Festival and theme, and commissioned a Feasibility Study from Robert Kerr, who had produced the Cultural Olympiad as part of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. This study included appraisals of the potential funding from various sources, public and private, and was completed in the fall of 2012. Our Task Force has since been meeting regularly, refining our plans, and we have been in continuing discussions with potential funders and partners. The ISCM Canadian Section is partnering with Music on Main, a Vancouver Series with Artistic Director David Pay, in order to present the WNMDs Festival. We also plan to partner with many Vancouver concert series, so they will each present a concert during the WNMDs and become ‘categories’ in the Call for Scores. We are currently developing further ideas for the project. Music on Main became a Full Associate Member of the ISCM in 2013, with our support.

Members’ Support Fund: In 2013 we made an application to the Members’ Support Fund of the ISCM to sponsor -- with Toronto ensembles/organizations Continuum, Arraymusic and The Music Gallery-- a collaborative project with Gaudeamus Muziekweek of the Netherlands. The project is to be called “Gaudeamus: Deconstructed and Reconstructed: A project of international exchange and comparison of perspectives”, organized to present a series of events in April 2014 to link the Dutch and Canadian Sections in performances, workshops and panel discussions around composers from each country. This application was successful, and the project will be carried out in 2014.

WNMD Selection process and CD production: In 2011/12 we had held three juries, for the 2012, 2013, and 2014 World New Music Days Calls for Works, in July and December of 2011 and May of 2012, and selected six works each time and submitted them to the International Call. Works from each Call have been chosen for performance in the corresponding World New Music Days. In 2012 we produced Canadian Section CDs for the 2012 and 2013 WNMDs, and are now preparing to produce our CD for the 2014 WNMDs. We distribute these CDs each year to ISCM delegates, as well as composers, performers and programmers.
