In a close co-operation between the ISCM Canadian Section, the ISCM Netherlands Section and several Canadian new music organisation, two festivals will take place in Canada in April 2014. During these events Dutch and Canadian musicians join forces in studying and performing works by Dutch, Canadian and international composers:

“Gaudeamus: Deconstructed and Reconstructed”, 3-4 and 12 April in Toronto The festival is organized in co-operation with Continuum Ensemble, Music Gallery, Arraymusic and the ISCM Canadian Section.

“Gaudeamus – Montréal”, 6-12 April in Montréal The festival is organized in co-operation with ‘Innovations en concert’







Continuum, Arraymusic and the Music Gallery join forces to bring the artistic vision of The Netherlands’ famed Gaudeamus Muziekweek to Toronto. For decades Gaudeamus has been one of the most important breeding grounds for new directions in music. In this two-night summit, local and Dutch musicians and video artists express the latest in improvisation, and the ensembles of Continuum and Arraymusic are joined by Dutch musicians in works that crackle with Gaudeamus spirit.

3 April: “Gaudeamus Deconstructed”
A new structured improvisation by Allison Cameron (CA), an existing work by a Dutch composer and a collective improvisation.
Performers: Michiel van Dijk (saxophone), Nicole Rampersaud (trumpet), Koen Kaptijn (trombone), Josh Cole (bass), Rick Sacks (drums, percussion), Allison Cameron (electronics), Steve Reaume (improvised visuals).

4 April: “Gaudeamus Reconstructed”

Performers: Trio 7090: Bas Wiegers, Koen Kaptijn and Nora Mulders are established at the highest level as soloists and chamber musicians, in The Netherlands and beyond. Formed to explore the music of Iannis Xenakis, this trio of violin, trombone and piano switches with ease from Xenakis to Brahms, from Finnissy to improvisation with electronics.




The International Meeting Gaudeamus-Montréal is a week of festivities produced by Innovations en concert, to celebrate and develop ties between Quebec and the Netherlands. The project includes concerts, a creative residency, and an international colloquium featuring a dozen emerging composers from the Netherlands and Quebec.
Notable guests include the Amsterdam Trio 7090, and composition mentors Yannis Kyriakides (Netherlands), Christopher Butterfield (Canada), and Michael Finnissy (Great Britain). The Montreal partners Ensemble La Machine, percussionist Diego Espinosa, the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur and CIRMMT join forces to bring you four concerts and public forums.
