VENI ACADEMY - workshops & academy 2021

  • Description:

VENI ACADEMY is a community of young people who like to play music they do not normally encounter at school. The way to play this music is mediated by experienced lecturers, especially players from the VENI ensemble, who take care of further artistic growth of the students. During its almost 10-year existence, the VENI ACADEMY project has grown into quite unexpected proportions: from the originally modest intention to offer a creative environment for students of Slovak music high schools and universities, its territory of influence gradually expanded first to former Czechoslovakia, then to other European countries. In the outputs during the previous 10 years, we have focused on marginalized communities and held workshops at schools for Roma students.

To this day, over 300 students – not only from Europe, but also from countries outside the continent –have taken part in the VENI ACADEMY projects. In addition to numerous successful concerts in various environments (from conventional concert halls, through unusual spaces such as parks, shopping centers, or urban trams, to large-scale events such as the Music Biennale Zagreb or the Pohoda festival), the VENI ACADEMY ensemble also released a CD, “ROLLING TONES / In zarter Bewegung”, which won the prestigious Radio_Head Award 2013 for “Best album of the year in the Classical Music category”. In 2018, another CD, “DISPERSION“, was released on the prominent American Mode Records label, with the music of the legendary American composer and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp, recorded during the summer academy of 2015 in the Košice “barracks”. In 2016, together with partners from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Croatia, we organized the VENI ACADEMY: 4x4 project, which was attended by composers and students from V4 countries –workshops in 4 countries, call for scores, and academy culminated in a concert in Bratislava. We organize our activities every year at regular intervals.

VENI ACADEMY is a unique project, not only in Slovakia but also in the European context. We focus on addressing the lack of opportunities for students to learn about contemporary music in schools. Within traditional education, the emphasis is put on music starting from the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Music after 1950 is almost absent from music education. Students do not have the opportunity to gain knowledge about this music, which is a disadvantage for them later in professional life and it lowers their competitiveness. In the VENI ACADEMY project, we bring together music professionals and students on a non-hierarchical principle – students and lecturers play together in an ensemble, which means they are “colleagues”. We take advantage of a special type of ensemble play focused on creative interpretative-improvisational solutions, the so-called opened and graphic scores. We motivate students to find their own solutions and provide them with stimuli for further growth. An aesthetically plausible result can be achieved relatively quickly and easily. While the execution of classical scores means rehearsing – a drill with uncertain outcome –, creative work with sound brings interesting discoveries without exhaustion and the feeling of excessive effort. This is one of the most innovative trends in education and VENI ACADEMY embodies this trend.

In VENI ACADEMY, we have cooperated with more than 300 collaborators from 9 countries of the world. There are 34 pieces in our repertoire (of which 15 pieces written for VENI ACADEMY). We have performed 27 concerts in Europe and the USA. We have premiered 17 compositions, held 16 week-long sessions (academies) and 13 workshops at schools, and released 2 CDs. So far, several important partners and institutions have participated in the implementation of the project: Muzički biennale Zagreb, ISCM, Mode Records, the State Philharmonic Košice, the Slovak Radio, the Melos Étos festival, the Liszt Academy in Budapest, the Zagreb Academy of Music, music high schools in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland, the Roulette Intermedium club in New York City, and others. We have cooperated with renowned artists at home and abroad: Elliott Sharp (USA), Alex Guevara (PE), Kornél Fekete-Kovács, Balázs Horváth (HU), Hilary Jeffery (GB), Zygmunt Krauze (PL), and others. VENI ACADEMY has been continually expanding from a ”local“ level to an international one. We continue with this trend in this project thanks to strong partners.
VENI ACADEMY - workshops & academy 2021 expands our know-how and knowledge in the form of an international project that we will implement in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. In the VENI ACADEMY project, we provide space to students of high schools and universities of artistic focus (mainly students of music), but at the same time to young people – students of other disciplines who are somehow engaged in musical activites and can handle their instrument at a certain level. This way, we put the members of the target group on one level, which is impossible in regular orchestras and ensembles.

The project naturally develops partnerships (networking) at several levels – students from various countries – the creation of new projects, groups, ensembles, experience exchange among lecturers and among the members of the production team, and strengthens new or existing relationships. Lecturers are a part of various expert groups working on educational standards in the field of music education and a part of advisory bodies of the Ministry of Education, Sport, Science, and Research.

The ambition and the long-term goal of our project is to engage students in active perception and interpretation of contemporary music. We would like to point their attention to new play techniques, help them discover new works and profile their focus with an emphasis on contemporary music. It is young musicians who will later become teachers and will pass this knowledge to their students – mostly children, for whom the main characteristics of contemporary music (sound, creativity, improvisation, unconventionality) feel completely natural and also support their musicality.

The VENI ACADEMY - workshops & academy 2021 project builds on our long, more than 10-year history. It is our experience that students participate in our project several years in a row – this way we create an important continuity in their education. We want to establish long-term and valuable relations with our partners.
